A Whole New Me:
From the very beginning I have always looked at writing as a time to have a “free voice.” I still believe that today. This course has helped me find an even stronger voice. I am not scared in any way to express myself through writing. It is my comfort zone. This class not only helped me develop a stronger voice but also improved my writing in so many ways. I feel like I can write a college paper at ease.
From the Writing Project 1 to Writing Project 5, I can tell there is a major change in the way I write. From my first paper, Slow and Steady, to the last paper, the Editor Letter, there are not as many grammatical errors. Punctuation is not my strong suit and I know I will always have problems with that, especially with commas. I know that they are needed in certain places but I still will always forget one. That is just how I am. From this course though, I feel like I have improved somewhat. I also feel more confident in how to do MLA format. I always knew how to do it but in high school, my teacher always preferred we just wrote our names at the bottom. I lost touch with how it is properly set up. Now I have it memorized.
I have improved as a writer by, like I said before, with how I am not afraid to be myself in my papers. I liked how this course gave me that chance. No matter what all these papers had a little bit of us in them. Even the article summaries. In the end we needed to incorporate how the meanings of the articles came back to us. Mine was all about not giving up and I have no intention of doing so. I also learned that, you need to go back and check your papers. My thought process is, what’s done is done. I do not like to second-guess myself. We need to go back and check to make sure that we make sense in papers. Of course I have a language all my own and just believe I make sense, so it was nice having people there to edit my papers saying they had no clue what I was saying.
In Writing Project 1, I at first had no idea what to write. I was so confused and sat there for a while just thinking on what I even could relate to. I am a big child at heart so I immediately thought back to childhood stories and nursery rhymes. That is how I came to think of, The Tortoise and the Hare. It took me awhile also to even write anything. The words just were not coming to me. I was nervous since it was a new class and they would think I am weird for saying I was a tortoise. That paper helped me with just not caring what people thought and just going for it. No matter how stupid it may have sounded.
My favorite Writing project would have to be 2. That one was the easiest for me to do. It was all about us and there was no research or anything needed for it. It was just you and a blank document. It was our own memories. That one as well as the first let me open myself up more. Not a lot of people know about my dad when I first meet them. I do not want to make them feel sorry for me in anyway, so showing how reading and writing helped me when he died was a huge thing.
Writing Project 3 was one of my least favorites. I thought it was a little too easy to do. I do not really like to write papers on things that others have previously written about, even though I know I am going to have to. I learned from this paper about citations and the works cited page. I have done those previously for a research project in high school, but I never really understood citations. I never really liked them but I know we need to have them in certain papers.
Writing Project 4 was another favorite of mine. I am always very judgmental of movies and TV shows so this was fun for me. I always am trying to get my friends to watch Once Upon a Time with me but when I even begin to explain the show, they think I am crazy. I hope I hooked a few of you to watch it. I learned from this paper on how to put pictures and set up a different format. It took me awhile to figure out how to set up the pictures just right within the paper. It was very frustrating for the most part, but now I know how to accomplish it when the time comes again.
The final Writing Project was not my favorite at all. I felt like I understood the assignment but I know I did not do very well on it. I am not an argumentive person so it was difficult for me. I will always just agree with what other people have to say. I never wrote a letter like that to an editor or any other person, so that helped me with knowing what to do if I ever do need to. The citations and works cited also helped me a lot.
I am taking a lot of sociology classes for my major, so that requires a lot of papers. I feel comfortable with research and having to cite almost everything that is not our own. In the future, I hope to be in the FBI or be out in the field investigating crime scenes. That job requires a lot of paperwork I will need to file. This course has helped me with making sense of my writings. I have to be very thorough and detailed with the paperwork. I feel I can do it now.
Overall, I think I am a stronger writer. I hope my professor thinks so as well. I will take all that I have learned and use it for college and in the future. I will still read and write to help me express myself. I hope to never lose any of it. It will always be there for me as a comfort zone. I will never lose touch of that. I quoted once before C.S. Lewis. This quote summed up writing in a perfect way for me. C.S. Lewis said, “You can make anything by writing.” I intend to do just that.
